What is a suppository?

A suppository is a small, solid form of medication that is inserted into the body through the rectal or vaginal opening. Once inside, it melts and releases the active ingredients directly where they’re needed.

This method provides targeted relief and allows the active compounds to be absorbed more effectively than oral or inhaled products.

Step-by-Step Guides

1: Wash your hands

Wash your hands well with soap and water before handling the suppository.
2: Prepare the suppository

Carefully remove the suppository from its packaging.

If the suppository becomes soft or melts after being exposed to direct sunlight or high temperatures, keep it sealed in its original packaging and place it in the refrigerator for 30 to 60 minutes.

This will allow it to return to a solid form suitable for use. Do not open the packaging or attempt to use the suppository while it is still soft.
3: Get into position

Find a comfortable position—either lying down or standing with one leg raised (on a chair or toilet seat).
4: Insert the suppository:

Gently insert the suppository into the vaginal opening using your finger.

Aim to insert it about 2.5 to 4 cm deep (similar to the depth of a tampon). The goal is for the suppository to be past the muscular opening to stay in place.
If you feel any resistance or discomfort, take a moment to adjust the position—it should feel comfortable, not painful.
5: After insertion:

Once the suppository is in place, lie down or stay still for about 15 minutes to give it time to dissolve and be absorbed.

Don’t forget to wash your hands afterward.

4: Insert the suppository:

Gently insert the suppository into the rectum, tapered end first.

Aim for about 2.5 cm into the rectum, just past the anal sphincter. It doesn’t need to be deeply inserted for it to be effective.

If you feel any discomfort, pause and adjust your position or the depth.
5: After insertion:

After inserting, remain lying down or seated for about 15 minutes to give the suppository time to dissolve and absorb.

Don’t forget to wash your hands afterward.

What to expect

Onset time:

The suppository typically starts working within 15 to 30 minutes. You may feel some initial sensations, like a mild cooling or tingling, which is normal.

What should I feel?
Once dissolved, the suppository will be absorbed, and you should not feel it. If you experience discomfort or pain, stop using and contact your healthcare provider.

Storage Instructions

Keep your suppositories in a cool, dry place at room temperature (not above 25°C).

However, occasional excursions up to 30°C are not problematic if the average temperature is kept between 20°C and 25°C.

Store them in their original packaging to maintain their integrity.

Keep out of reach of children.
