What is a suppository?
A suppository is a small, solid form of medication that is inserted into the body through the rectal or vaginal opening. Once inside, it melts and releases the active ingredients directly where they’re needed. This method provides targeted relief and allows the active compounds to be absorbed more effectively than oral or inhaled products.
Step-by-Step Guides
Wash your hands well with soap and water before handling the suppository.
Carefully remove the suppository from its packaging.
If the suppository becomes soft or melts after being exposed to direct sunlight or high temperatures, keep it sealed in its original packaging and place it in the refrigerator for 30 to 60 minutes.
This will allow it to return to a solid form suitable for use. Do not open the packaging or attempt to use the suppository while it is still soft.
Find a comfortable position—either lying down or standing with one leg raised (on a chair or toilet seat).
Gently insert the suppository into the vaginal opening using your finger. Aim to insert it about 2.5 to 4 cm deep (similar to the depth of a tampon). The goal is for the suppository to be past the muscular opening to stay in place. If you feel any resistance or discomfort, take a moment to adjust the position—it should feel comfortable, not painful.
Once the suppository is in place, lie down or stay still for about 15 minutes to give it time to dissolve and be absorbed.
Don’t forget to wash your hands afterward.

Gently insert the suppository into the rectum, tapered end first.
Aim for about 2.5 cm into the rectum, just past the anal sphincter. It doesn’t need to be deeply inserted for it to be effective.
If you feel any discomfort, pause and adjust your position or the depth.
After inserting, remain lying down or seated for about 15 minutes to give the suppository time to dissolve and absorb.

What to expect
Onset time:
The suppository typically starts working within 15 to 30 minutes. You may feel some initial sensations, like a mild cooling or tingling, which is normal.
What should I feel?
Once dissolved, the suppository will be absorbed, and you should not feel it. If you experience discomfort or pain, stop using and contact your healthcare provider.
Storage Instructions
Keep your suppositories in a cool, dry place at room temperature (not above 25°C).
However, occasional excursions up to 30°C are not problematic if the average temperature is kept between 20°C and 25°C.
Store them in their original packaging to maintain their integrity.
Keep out of reach of children.
Suppository FAQs
How do I use suppositories while on my period or using a tampon/menstrual cup?
You can use Hazel Suppositories during your period, though some people prefer to use the suppositories rectally during active bleeding. If you’re using a tampon or menstrual cup, it’s best to remove it before inserting the suppository. This helps ensure the medication can be properly absorbed through the vaginal lining and isn’t blocked or displaced by the device.
Many participants choose to use a pad afterwards to manage any mild leakage as the suppository melts. If you'd like to reinsert a tampon or menstrual cup, we recommend waiting at least 30 minutes to give the active ingredients time to begin absorbing. Inserting something too soon may interfere with how much of the medication is absorbed or how well it stays in place.
What if the suppository has melted?
If the suppository has melted — for example, if it was accidentally left in direct sunlight or exposed to high temperatures — keep it sealed in its original packaging and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30-60 minutes. This will allow it to resolidify and make it easier to insert. Avoid opening the packaging or using it while it’s still soft.
Can I drive while using the suppository?
That depends on which product you're using:
- If you're using the non-THC formulation, you can drive and continue your usual activities. However, CBD and CBG may cause drowsiness or dizziness in some individuals. If you feel affected, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the product impacts you.
- If you're using the THC-containing suppository, you must not drive or operate heavy machinery unless permitted under your state or territory laws. Even if you don’t feel impaired, driving with THC in your system is a legal offence in most parts of Australia. Speak with your prescribing doctor and check local regulations before driving.
How far should I insert the suppository?
Insert the suppository about 2.5 to 4 cm into the vagina or rectum (similar to the depth of a tampon). This should be just far enough to ensure it doesn’t slip out. It doesn’t need to be inserted deeply at the cervix — it just needs to be placed past the muscular opening so it can stay in place and begin melting gradually.
Will it cause any discharge or mess?
A little discharge is completely normal after using a suppository. Once inserted, the suppository melts and is absorbed through the vaginal or rectal lining, but the base material (natural fats and oils) doesn’t fully absorb and may leak from the vaginal canal over the next few hours.
You might notice a light oily residue or slight staining on underwear or clothing. To prevent mess or staining, you may want to wear a liner or pad after insertion, especially during the day or overnight.
What if I need to go to the bathroom afterward?
Try to empty your bladder and bowels before inserting the suppository — this helps prevent it being accidentally expelled.
For vaginal use, urinating and having a bowel movement before insertion can reduce the chance of expulsion.
If you have a bowel movement within 10 minutes, insert a new suppository. If you have a bowel movement after 15 minutes, do not reinsert the suppository — it’s safer to have some loss than to risk doubling the dose.
What if I need to remove it?
If you experience discomfort soon after insertion and wish to remove the suppository, you can do so gently using clean fingers. However, keep in mind that once the suppository begins melting, it may not be possible to remove it fully. If the discomfort persists or you experience unusual symptoms, discontinue use and contact the study team or your doctor for guidance.
Can I have sex after using it?
We recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after using a suppository before engaging in vaginal or anal sex, depending on your method of suppository administration. This gives the body enough time to absorb the active ingredients and reduces the risk of reduced efficacy or product transfer to your partner.
Having sex too soon after insertion may disrupt the suppository before it's fully absorbed, cause medication transfer (especially if THC is present), and alter sensation or lubrication due to the melted base ingredients
If you’re unsure, it’s best to wait or consider using the suppository at a different time of day. For your safety and your partner’s, always allow time for proper absorption—particularly with THC-containing suppositories.
Remember: Hazel Suppositories are oil-based and should not be used with condoms.
Can I use an applicator for vaginal insertion?
Yes. Hazel Suppositories can be inserted using a standard vaginal applicator, though one is not currently supplied with the product. If using an applicator, choose one designed for flat-bottomed suppositories (not ovule-style). These are available online or through pelvic health providers. Applicators may help with ease and comfort, especially if you have difficulty inserting the suppository manually.
Can I use a lubricant when inserting the suppository?
Yes. A small amount of water-based lubricant can be safely used for both vaginal and rectal insertion to ease comfort and reduce friction. Avoid oil-based lubricants, as they may affect absorption and are not compatible with latex condoms.
